Brittany's Pick: The Teller of Small Fortunes by Julie Leong

A wandering fortune teller finds an unexpected family in this warm and wonderful debut fantasy.

Tao is a teller of (you guessed it) small, inconsequential fortunes who, traveling only with her trusty mule Laohu, is running from a fate she does not want. To this end, she doesn’t stay in one place for too long.  Soon though, she is joined (much to her initial chagrin) by a rag-tag group of travelers which includes an ex-thief, and ex-mercenary, an apprentice baker, and a very, VERY grumpy cat.

As we follow this ever-growing caravan, we see why Tao is adamant about refusing to tell any large, life-changing fortunes to those seeking her services. She comes to see that facing her past will allow her to have a brighter, less encumbered future.

First, consider my heart thoroughly warmed by this story. This book is so very, very wholesome. If you are looking for a cozy fantasy novel with a cast of…just delightful characters, look no further. Even the baddies aren’t so bad. While there is tragedy in this book, it is handled gently and I loved the ending. Think ugly, happy tears.

I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who needs a break from high-stakes plots or perhaps someone who just prefers lovely stories with little violence.

Did I mention the VERY grumpy cat?
