June 2024: Blogging with Heather

Trains, Planes, and Travel, Oh My! Just as the school year is ending, the fun and adventure at the library is just beginning. The end of May officially starts LPPL’s Summer Experience which contains fun for the whole family. This year’s theme is “Adventure Begins at the Library” and our branches are living up to this theme by allowing our patrons to explore this summer through our reading programs, craft programs, performances, and so much more. Summer Experience at our libraries can be broken up into a few parts:

Reading Program

The first and probably the most important part of our Summer Experience is the reading portion. Participants of all ages (Children, Teens, & Adults) can sign up for the program in-person at the library. Each participant will receive a passport which allows them to track their reading during the summer. All you have to do is read for at least twenty minutes a day and log this reading on your passport in some way (place a check mark, an X, a sticker, draw a smiley face, etc). Once you have 5 days of reading, bring your passport back to the library and we will stamp your progress and you will win a prize. This will continue until the end of summer or once you have completed 30 days of reading and have attended one June program and one July program at the library. At this point in your journey your name will be entered into a drawing for one of our prize packs.

Events, Programs, and/or Crafts

Aside from the reading portion of the experience, our staff has put together some amazing events, programs, and/or crafts for patrons to participate in. We have library staff that will travel to all of the branches and conduct painting classes, mixed media art projects, paper crafts and so much more. A couple of branches have exercise classes so you can get moving this summer. Each branch has a weekly storytime in which stories, songs, activities and a craft will take place. We also have techy programs such as computer classes, Lego Robotics, and CodeCombat. We have classes where you can learn new skills such as crocheting, sewing, and line dancing and crafts that celebrate Father’s Day, and early celebrations of the Fourth of July. In addition to all of these fun programs we have an Escape Room this year that will gear you up for the upcoming Olympics, movie matinees, games of Bingo, and even a Karaoke Party in Gheens.

Special Events

The adventure continues in June with three special programs for all ages: a magic show by Magician Tim Spinosa, live animal visits courtesy of Animal Tales, and an educational snack program from LSU Ag.

All of these adventures I mentioned can be found on our LPPL calendar located at https://lafourche.librarycalendar.com/events/upcoming or on our special Summer Experience page on our website (https://www.lafourche.org/summer-experience-2024). We hope you join our adventures this summer and we look forward to traveling with you! - Heather, Branch Manager
