Even though our summer experience program is over, we’re still busy here at LPPL. The fall season is full of engaging programs, all free to attend. In the month of September, we will be hosting several activities to celebrate our community and literacy.
LIBRARY CARD MEMBERSHIP MONTH
We always say that Lafourche Parish Public Libraries are more than books. We are a community hub that offers access to materials for free. September is Library Card Membership Month. If you haven’t been to our libraries in a while, we’ve revamped our library card system to comply with Act 436. We now offer 3 types of library cards to meet the needs of our patrons. If you aren’t a member of our library system, there are several reasons why you should join:
Borrow items instead of buying-With the rising costs of everything, save some cash by borrowing items such as tablets, DVDs, audiobooks, graphing calculators, laptops, and hotspots. We even have a savings calculator on our website so you can crunch the numbers on how much you save by borrowing instead of buying.
Learn something new 24/7-We offer classes daily on a variety of topics, such as painting, macramé, sewing, and crocheting. You can even customize a class by requesting to Book-A-Librarian. In these classes, library staff will teach you how to navigate computers, tablets, and even your phone. If you can’t make it into a branch for a class, don’t sweat it—we offer online classes, research materials, and learning resources via our online subscription services on our website.
Free entertainment-Check out a virtual reality book, Launchpad tablet, Adventure Kit, or video game for yourself and your kiddos. In addition to these great items, we also provide access to tv series, movies, music, audiobooks, ebooks, magazines, and language learning tools all online.
If you haven’t updated your card yet (or registered for one), we’ll be offering some incentives during the month of September so you can upgrade your membership.
Register for your first library card or upgrade your current card to our new system to receive the following perks (while supplies last):
LPPL Official Member Button
Sonic Coupon
Name in Prize Drawing
(If you already have upgraded your membership, you will be grandfathered in and can receive the above perks by visiting us & checking out in September.)
We will also be running a Library Card Membership Month Bingo during the month of September. To participate, simply visit your favorite Lafourche Parish Public Library Branch to pick up a bingo card.
Visit any of our branches or apply for a membership online. Visit our Get a Library Card page for more information about Lafourche Parish Public Library card membership.
FINE FORGIVENESS MONTH
We get it. Everyone lives busy lives, and things come up. Getting your items back to the library gets overlooked. If you’ve accrued fines, worry not. Every March and September, we offer Fine Forgiveness Month to our patrons. Help out yourself and your community by paying off library fines with non-perishable food items and/or pet supplies. Another bonus during Fine Forgiveness Month is no fines for late items.
To check your account balance, call or use the chat feature to find out how much you may owe. Check out our suggested donation chart below to determine how many items you need to bring in to clear your fines. Donations are based upon the amount of money owed.
Once you determine how much you owe, you have the entire month to bring in your donations to the customer service desk. We’ll take care of the fines and get your card back in good standing. You can even upgrade your card and get rewarded during the month of September for Library Card Membership Month too.
There are a few stipulations to Fine Forgiveness Month:
-Your food donations must not be expired, so check the expiration dates before bringing you items in. (We give these donations to families/animals in need, and no one wants expired goods.)
-Fines for the following items are not included in this program and cannot be forgiven: Adventure Kits, Hotspots, iPads, Laptops, Launchpads, Nooks, Playaways, Views, and Video Games.
1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN
September is our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten launch month. The concept is simple and the rewards are limitless: read to your newborn/infant/toddler 1,000 books before they enter kindergarten. This program strives to encourage literacy and a love of reading. You can even read the same books over and over.
The goal of this program is to provide a simple yet fun approach to establishing strong early literacy skills. Keep track of their progress with log sheets (or online via the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten app) that are turned into your local library. Check-in with us at every 100-book milestone for rewards & photo opportunities.
In September, we will be celebrating those individuals who have completed the challenge. If you’d like to know more about this program, we invite you to attend a 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program near you.
